November ‘Third Saturday Bird Walk’ Bird Walk Stony Kill Farm

Our group met on a very cold morning at Stony Kill Farm in Dutchess County.

We were greeted with a lot of bird activity right away and we able to watch two Pileated Woodpeckers hard at work before even leaving the parking lot. We made our way to the gardens and were happy to see them full of sparrows, finches, and blackbirds. The highlight here was the abundance of White-crowned Sparrows including two adults and many immatures.

As a bonus, one of the adults was singing nearly the entire time we were in the garden area! The sparrows present highlighted the transition to our typical winter species including Dark-eyed Juncos, White-throated Sparrows, and a couple of American Tree Sparrows.

As we made our way through the farm, late fall migration was in full swing with numerous flocks of robins and blackbirds migrating overhead, and a huge flock of house finches landing in one of the fields. Overall, a fun and exciting walk with all of the species typical of this habitat well represented and cooperative for our group!
